HIAA 0100 INTRODUCTORY STUDIO (SINGLE CREDIT)
This single credit class introduces students to the basic elements of architecture, such as structure, materials, function, space, light etc. The first goal is to teach students to see. Participants in this xclass will come away with heightened skills of observation and analysis of the built environment. They will then take on several small design tasks, putting their newly acquired skills to work on projects that aim to improve a particular situation. In the course of the class, students will be introduced to the essential tools of the architect, tools of imagination, of planning and of representation. Students will learn to draw buildings they see, and architectures they imagine.
They will understand how to construct plans, elevations, sections, axonometries and perspectives and progress from simple line drawings by hand to working with drafting tools to computer renderings and animations. The final project is often a "House for yourself" or a small kiosk.
